Intern At CA: Udatta Bhattacharya

Roy T. Bennett, self-help writer and author of the famous ‘The Light in the Heart’ was quoted, “Dreams don’t work unless you take action. The surest way to make your dreams come true is to live them.”

This stands very true for one of CA’s interns, Udatta Bhattacharya. A final year student of The UPES, Dehradun, Udatta always dreamt of working for a company that was a leader in the mainframe development industry and his dream materialized when he got the opportunity to work for CA India.

How did you know about CA Technologies?
On asking him about how he came across CA Technologies, he said “I heard about CA for the first time during the first year at UPES from my Mainframe faculty, when I was intrigued about the Mainframe industry and the companies involved in it. CA caught my attention since it stood out among others when it came to Mainframe based product development. All along, I was determined to pursue Mainframe technologies and got an internship in IBM. During that internship, CA again came up as the major developer of most of the non-indigenous products at IBM. The name CA was held in high regards when Mainframe-based tools were discussed.”

How was the intern program selection process?
But, fulfilling dreams isn’t very easy and requires hard work and dedication and it is only then that one relishes the fruit of labor. Udatta says it was quiet challenging to get through the internship selection process of CA.“The process involved one round of aptitude and technical screenings, one round of technical interview and one round of managerial interview. This process resulted in my selection at CA as an intern in the mainframe business unit. The process was challenging. It made me think, push boundaries, and above all, it tested my mainframe knowledge and skills, which was a unique experience for me since I never had such an experience in other selection processes. It was in this process where my knowledge in my own specialization was evaluated.”

What exposure did you receive on your CA Internship?
Internships are meant to be an extensive learning experience which prepares you for the actual challenges in the fast-paced, dynamic, competitive and ever-growing industry and this is exactly what CA provided Udatta with.

He says, “The role assigned to me during my internship was that of a learner basically. There was a lot on my plate to learn, grasp and be familiarized with. I got introduced to a couple of programming languages namely Assembler and Metal C which are the two major languages used to build and develop the tools. After having a basic idea of the languages, I was assigned 3 projects to have a hands-on with certain DB2 tools such as RC/Merger, RC/Query, and RC/Extract.”

How did your assigned CA mentor benefit your internship experience?
The right learning requires a direction, which only a mentor can provide and every employee at CA is a unique source of information and knowledge. Udatta too was mentored by one of the best at CA and he feels extremely lucky to be a part of such a supportive and helpful team. This is what Udatta had to say about his mentoring experience:

“I was mentored by Lokesh Patel, who is a member of my team i.e. DB2 Rangers. He guided me through the entire process of building DB2 tools, especially the languages used. He helped me set up my development environment along with Sridhar Pratik in the same team. He also guided me whenever I got stuck or had difficulty understanding something. Overall, he introduced me to my work and in a way, helped me kickstart my professional life. Since I wasn’t familiar with these languages before joining CA, I needed some help, reference and guidance from people using the languages, and was fortunate enough to have a mentor who is an absolute expert in the field. I got a bit of both appreciation and encouragement from the Product Owner Srinivas Adupa, who’d set milestones for me to reach and guided me through to those. My work wasn’t perfect, hence he pointed out my flaws and let me improve upon them.”

What do you like most about CA Technologies?
Learning is just not limited to skills at CA. The company believes that in order to hone one’s skills and perform well, people require a conducive, lively and relaxed environment and that is only possible when people come together and feel like a single unit.

“The thing I liked the most about the company is the work culture. It is apparent from the satisfaction and enthusiasm the people have working around me. I became familiarized with the Scaled Agile Framework and was made a part of a team and as a result, as well as shared a strong professional bond with all its members. This provided a huge motivation to work collaboratively and never feel isolated from the entire process. They’ve guided me through all my difficulties, and the best part, made me feel comfortable working with them as soon as I joined the team.” says Udatta.

How was the success of your internship rewarded?
A dedicated and passionate student, a proficient mentor and a jubilant environment make the perfect potion for success. Post two months of persistent efforts and endeavor, Udatta finally was rewarded for his hard work with an offer to become a permanent and integral part of CA Technologies.

“I received a Letter of Intent for a permanent job at CA after two months of my internship, which was of course based on my performance at the company during my internship. I felt that this was the biggest appreciation or reward of what I had contributed so far and adding to that, the result of all my preparations during the college days to get this dream job. Initially, I had a bit of self-doubt about my performance as an intern as to whether I’d be able to live up to what was expected of me. Rather, the job offer came as a satisfactory answer to all such questions.”

What do you like most about the ITC?
People are frequently asked whether they like what they do and generally, the answer is a halfhearted yes. A knowledgeable person once said the best way to gauge this is to notice if you wake up in the morning looking forward to going to work. If yes, you and your company are set for success. CA takes pride in being that company. We asked Udatta as to what made him look forward to coming to the CA campus every day?

His response to this was “The best part about my office is the fact that it has every facility that you look for in a workplace. It has a perfect balance of everything required. Honestly, during these first few days, I tended to spend more hours at work and didn’t really feel like leaving the campus. The building has a positive vibe of welcoming you to spend a good portion of your day and be productive to the best of your abilities. To back that up, there are the facilities. Up until now, I’ve been regularly visiting the gym and the cafeteria. At times my team goes for a cricket match in the field and I enjoy a game of table tennis with my colleagues occasionally. These really contribute a major part to my physical and mental health.”

What advice would you offer to those who are currently looking for an internship?
Udatta has truly set an example for other students who aspire to work at CA as interns and employees. He is the first student from his college to have received an opportunity to work for CA technologies and post his experience at CA, more and more students from his college aspire to follow the path taken by him.

On being asked as to what would he advise to others on choosing a company to work for, he happily stated, “My only message to the aspirants would be to always stay positive because good companies like CA Technologies do exist. CA Technologies, unlike many other companies, values your specialized skills and provides the chance to build your careers upon them. I chose mainframe and CA gave me the perfect platform to kickstart my career on a high note. Further, I’d advise them not to take their specializations for granted or lose hope in it. Because in CA, these specialized skills are valued to a great extent and these may lead to you ending up with your dream job.”

What it’s like to work as a Lead Teacher at a CA Montessori Children’s Center

We’re introducing some of the outstanding Teachers at our company-subsidized, on-site Montessori Centers, which CA has provided for the past 25 years in our larger global offices for the children and family members of our employees. This profile of one of our Montessori Lead Teachers is part of our careers blog series “A Day in The Life At CA”.

 Meet Diana

Diana Goshorn, Lead Teacher CA Montessori Children's CenterDiana Goshorn is a Lead Teacher for ages 0-3 at the Herndon, VA Montessori Center. She has been a teacher for 11 years, and has worked at CA for a total of six years. She has been in her current position for three years. She says her love of teaching started very early for her.

“When I was a child of 7 or 8, instead of going outside to play with my friends, I wanted to go to my neighbor’s house to feed her baby a bottle. When the child got older, they would let me babysit for short periods of time.”

In later years, Diana discovered that she had a knack for communicating with young children, so she decided to study Early Childhood Education.

When she’s not teaching, Diana likes to stay active.

“I work out at least once a week and more if possible. I also draw or paint. On the weekends, I love to go biking with my husband or just snuggle together to see a movie at home.”

An average day

Diana starts her day at 8:05 a.m., when she arrives and begins greeting her pupils and their parents and talking briefly about how the previous night was. When the parents leave, she proceeds to feed or change the infants as needed. If she has an assistant, one of them works with the more independent children while the other works with the youngest infants.

“We are very attuned to each child and know their particular patterns so we can meet their needs moment by moment. Although we have a guiding schedule, we are flexible to accommodate each child at this age.”

The rest of the day “goes by between feedings, changing diapers, singing, dancing, reading books, providing a lot of language, napping, and as much laughter as possible.” Diana’s day ends at 5:05 p.m.

The best part of the job?

Diana says her favorite part of the job is the joy she shares with the children.

“For the most part, I am greeted each day with wide smiles and warm hugs. I feel so fortunate to start each day that way!”

She also loves the physical environment at the center.

“The physical environment at this center is beautiful. I have seen many daycare centers that look gloomy and overcrowded. Thanks to CA’s vision, we can offer the children and their parents a bright and happy place each day… My classroom is my home … I strive to make it happy and peaceful.”

She adds:

“During the first three years of life, children internalize unconsciously the foundations for beauty and order, among other human tendencies. Thus, it is critical to have and maintain a beautifully prepared environment. I take that to heart.”

What it’s like to work as a Lead Teacher at a CA Montessori Children’s Center

 We’re celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week by introducing some of the outstanding Teachers at our company-subsidized, on-site Montessori Centers, which CA has provided for the past 25 years in our larger global offices for the children and family members of our employees. This profile of one of our Montessori Lead Teachers is part of our careers blog series “A Day in The Life At CA”.

Meet Katie

Katie Martin, Lead Teacher, CA Montessori Children's CenterKatie has been a preschool teacher for 7 years, six of those at the CA Technologies Montessori Children’s Center in Framingham, MA, where she teaches children from 3 to 6 years old. She’s wanted to be a teacher ever since she can remember.

“As a teenager, all my jobs revolved around children, working at camps, afterschool programs, etc. Those experiences finalized my decision to pursue a career as a teacher.”

Katie went to school with a focus on Early Childhood Education. Through her student teaching and practicums, she fell in love with working in preschool environments.

When she’s not teaching, Katie and her husband love to travel to new places or visit friends and family. She also volunteers as a coach for a youth lacrosse team in her town. “I played in college and have loved introducing the game to 9- and 10-year old girls. Seeing them enjoy the game the way I have is really rewarding!” she said.

A typical day

The first thing Katie does in the morning is set up her classroom to make sure she’s prepared for the day. The Center opens at 8:00 a.m., with children coming in throughout the morning depending on their parents’ work schedule. She greets the children as they come in and they spend time talking while enjoying breakfast. After breakfast, the children begin their work cycle. During this time, Katie works with the children individually, or in small groups.

“This teaching philosophy can take me from multiplication with one child to reading with another, or washing a table. I love being able to work one-on-one with the children, as it allows me to build individual relationships better than I can when working with large groups.”

After a three-hour work cycle, they go outside, where the children have opportunities to ride bikes, play in the sandbox, or use their imaginations to open an ice cream shop. Then it’s time for lunch.

“We eat our meals family style so we can sit and talk and enjoy lunch together. This is a wonderful time to connect as a group, before the children lay down for their nap.”

After nap time ends, around 3 p.m., there are snacks and thematic activities based on current events and the interests of the children.

“Every day follows the same schedule, but can be so different based on the children and their interests.”

The Center

We asked Katie what she feels is the best part of the center.

“The best part about the center is the team I work with. There are seven of us right now, and we really work well together to support each other and the children. Having relocated, I have really loved getting to know and build relationships with my coworkers.”

As for her classroom, she says the best part besides the children is the environment and Nala, the class’ pet rabbit.

“The best part of the classroom is how it promotes the children to be independent and a part of their own community. The room is warm and welcoming and meant to feel like a children’s house. The children have opportunities to interact with beautiful materials and make their own connections to the world around them.

“The children adore Nala and make sure that she is well taken care of. She hops around the room during our day and joins us outside when it’s nice out. Watching the children understand the responsibility and needs of an animal at this age is such a wonderful experience.”

Katie also loves hosting Center events.

“For the Olympics this year, we hosted an Olympic day with winter events and a photo booth. Having Center celebrations for holidays and events is such a special part of our school culture.”

 Meet Melissa

Melissa Delapaz-Smith, Lead Teacher, CA Montessori Children's CenterMelissa Delapaz-Smith is a Lead Teacher at the CA Children’s Montessori Center in Islandia, NY, where she has been teaching for almost 16 years. She has always enjoyed spending time with young children such as her cousins, nieces, nephews and friends, so it was only natural that she became a teacher. When she was a student at Stony Brook University, she volunteered at an on-campus preschool. That’s when she saw an ad for an open house at the CA Montessori Children’s Center.

“I saw that it was a Montessori setting and it was something I was very interested in, having gone to a Montessori school myself as a child.”

Outside of work, Melissa has two daughters, ages 9 and 12, who dance competitively and play softball. Her husband is also a teacher who works with children who have autism and does early intervention.

“Our family is fully supportive of each other, so we are always there for our girls, going to their dance competitions and softball games.”

Melissa and her family, who live in Long Beach, also love to spend time outdoors riding bikes, running on the boardwalk, or going to the beach. They are also huge Yankees fans and love going to baseball games as often as they can!

An average day at work

Melissa, who is often the first teacher to arrive, starts her day by greeting the children and their parents. She sets up her classroom and talks to parents about the morning or anything eventful that happened the night before. The children then help get breakfast ready and eat. By 9:15, breakfast is cleared and the children start choosing activities to work on.

For the remainder of the morning, she presents lessons, takes notes and makes observations. The children go outside to play while Melissa takes her lunch break. After lunch she helps them clean up and get settled into the afternoon work cycle. Children who are not napping choose activities, then she typically works with kindergarteners in smaller group lessons.

By 3:15, the kindergarteners leave the classrooms for their specials. On Thursdays, she teaches them science, where they utilize the center’s certified outdoor classrooms, weather permitting. When weather doesn’t permit, lessons take place in the science classroom, where she has been incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineer and math) subjects. The children then usually leave between 5 and 6 p.m.

“I love the age group that I teach. Part of the Montessori philosophy is mixed ages in a classroom, and in my classroom, the children’s ages range from 3 to 6 years old … I enjoy watching the older children take [the toddlers] underneath their wings, and they want to help them so much.”

We asked Melissa what her favorite part of the center is.

“I think that one of the best things about our center is that it is so family oriented. Many of the staff members have been working here for over 10 years. We have families who have had all of their children in the center and some of those former students are now in college. I have students that I taught who are now in high school, some in college as well, and some I keep in touch with.”

She also loves her classroom.

“The best part about my classroom is that I know the parents feel like they are not just dropping off their children with a babysitter. They know that the children are feeling loved and cared for, but they are also learning and they are getting life skills like independence, self-help and love of learning to prepare them for the future.”

“I honestly have to say that for me the best CA benefit is the Montessori Children’s Center. And I am not saying this because I work there. I was able to bring both of my girls to work with me every day from the time they were 3 months old. My managers and team members were so supportive of me, as I was also breastfeeding. I was able to step out of the classroom so that I could go downstairs and nurse.”

She also found CA and the CA Montessori Children’s Center to be very supportive when her family was severely affected by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

“I was able to take time off I needed and our family also received donations of clothing, supplies and emotional support. It was such a difficult time, but we were able to get through because of such support and caring.”

Why CA?

We asked Melissa what she would tell teachers wondering what it’s like to work for a school subsidized by a tech company, as opposed to a more traditional setting.

“It is such a unique environment, but I believe there are many benefits to being part of a tech company versus a school district. We are able to have all of the benefits CA employees have. We are also not restricted to take vacation during regular school vacations; we can take vacations at any time during the year.

“It is more of a family environment, instead of spending September through June with the children, you get to work with these children and their families for two to three years and really get to know them. I think you take an important role in shaping these children’s minds and really become a part of their families.

“I truly love what I do and the impact I have on these children’s lives. I feel fortunate to work for a company that places an importance on balancing work and family life.”

Meet Hannah Preston. She’s the Global Account Director, HSBC

What does a Global Account Director, HSBC do?

Hannah takes a leading role in understanding the bank’s vision to help them grow their business through utilizing CA software.

“My purpose is to help the World’s Largest Bank to be the best it can be. I firmly believe that CA has the tools the bank needs to be even more successful. It takes a collaborative effort from; Sales, Services/Education, Customer Success, Engineering, Partners and Consultants to achieve such ambitions. It is my job to navigate the Bank’s challenges and connect them to programs that deliver the right business outcomes. It takes more than tools to be successful. People are equally important. “Having a rake in the garden won’t make your garden beautiful. It is having a clear vision of the garden you desire, and then putting the rake to work is how you get the garden you want.” I want to fully understand the Banks vision, and help them execute their strategy.”   

Bring What You Bring

At CA, employees are encouraged to work with one another and build on each other’s strengths to create richer results. This ‘Bring What You Bring’ ethos is spread right across the organization and when speaking to Hannah about what she brings to CA she told us that her main asset is her creativity and her positive ripple effect, as she believes that an innovative approach inspires new ideas, energy and excitement.

“Creative flair, I love creating beautiful content, images, videos and ads. Well-crafted content can be very compelling in a sales strategy. Simplifying complexity is a characteristic that runs through everything I do. Making business outcome simple to understand helps buyers to understand the “why” which is important to get the right effect. If I think about the most valuable thing that I bring to CA, it is a positive ripple effect; I like to circulate positive energy, which tends to spark positive energy in others forgive me if that sounds a bit “hippy-dippy” but I have seen it make a real difference everywhere I go.”

One piece of advice for current or future Women Leaders

Hannah believes that a woman should never underestimate her strength and should continuously learn to evolve and grow.

“Go for it. Don’t wait for permission to advance, ask for what you want, know your value (don’t underestimate it), learn continuously (it will give you greater confidence).” 

My female inspiration

Hannah finds inspiration in women who are true and faithful to themselves and are always ready to help others.

“So many amazing inspiring female leaders: I look for women who are true to themselves, who have a purpose in life and help others and share their experiences. Stories of incredible women who negotiate peace in hostile conflict situations inspire me in business; these people are living proof that there are other ways to settle better outcomes, that do not require brute force and power battles. I believe we have the same opportunity for peaceful negotiation in business.”

Women in Leadership qualities

CA Technologies has a core of DNA that align with the company’s mission, to eliminate the barriers between ideas and business outcomes. Hannah has selected the most important DNA trait that she feels will make her a successful woman in leadership at CA Technologies.

Jeania “J” Burton has worked for CA for four years, working in our Boulder, CO office. Before that, she worked as a college-level academic and creative writing instructor at Colorado State University, where she earned her master’s degree in writing.

“I liked teaching, but I went into the master’s program with an eye toward being a working writer; so, when a friend of mine said they were hiring technical writers at his office, I jumped at the chance.”

J is a member of two or three development scrum teams at any given time, where she brings in the user’s experience, challenges and desires into what our products might do and how they might do them.

“Using the information that I gather from Project Managers, Product Owners, Architects, Developers, QA Engineers, and others about our products, I write how-to guides, and produce how-to videos that help our customers do what they need to do in order to take care of their customers.”

An average day

The first thing J typically does when she logs in for the day is read a passage from The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Living, a book of stoic philosophy co-authored by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman.

“I like starting the day with this book because the stoic philosophy jibes very well with the Agile methodology, where the only constant is change.”

Next, she checks documentation spaces for user comments and responds to them – even if it’s just to say that we’ll need to research their question or suggestion and get back to them. Then she checks her email and calendar and gets ready for whatever might come her way.

“No two days are alike and no day is predictable.”

J works on with a development team in Raleigh, North Carolina and with the Documentation team of other writers in Boulder, Colorado, so she attends daily stand-ups and Agile ceremonies with the other writers, and semi-regular WebEx synch ups with the team in Raleigh.

“In between regular meetings I’m often in one-on-one meetings with SMEs, working on text or video deliverables, and doing ad hoc work on initiatives in our information Engineering BU.”

J usually uses her lunch to read, research, or look at social media. She also looks for ways to be social in real life.

“Every quarter, our manager brings the writers together for a team lunch, and the development teams do semi-regular team-building stuff, too.”

She is also always on the lookout for opportunities to meet people outside of the office.

“Last spring, I entered a contest put on by the group Women at CA, the prize for which was the chance to go to the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Orlando, Florida. There, I got a chance to meet many of the CA people with whom I work remotely, and women from all over the world.”

The best part of the job

J says her favorite part of the job is being a working writer.

“When I was a kid, I day dreamed about being a writer and I am one. I might not be writing best-sellers as part of my ‘day job’ – like I dreamed of back then – but the informational writing and video work that I do on a daily basis does flex the critical thinking muscles that I use in the creative writing and videos I do in my time off.”

CA Benefits

J says that while the entire benefits package at CA is great, the most important thing to her has been the flexible time off and the support from her supervisors to take it.

“My manager and her managers always make me feel like I’m a human being first and an employee second, which is no small thing. My Dad passed away a year before I started at CA, and I really appreciated being able to take days here and there to help my mom in Utah sell the house to move.”

Many people who are new to the tech industry don’t know CA Technologies. We asked J what advice she would have for them about them about choosing to work for a lesser-known B2B technology company, rather than a better-known brand.

“At the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference in Orlando, Florida this past October, I worked the CA Technologies booth at the career exposition for a few hours. Talking to the recruits, I said that CA is one of the biggest technology companies that they maybe hadn’t heard about as a consumer because our clientele is mostly enterprise businesses.

“Because we are a big company, you get all that entails, such as great pay, benefits, corporate integrity, potential to move around and up through the company etc. But each site, even the HQ in Islandia, is small enough that you get to know and befriend your teammates like you would at a smaller company. It’s the best of both worlds.”

We want to go a step beyond and give you insight from a real CA employee. This profile of Oliver Sims III, Sr. Director, Presales, is part of our careers blog series “A Day in The Life At CA”.

In his role at CA, Oliver helps internal and external customers get to the heart of their issues, and then enables a solution. As a leader in the Mainframe Presales organization, he and his team are at the center of sales opportunities that are not only are significant in value and scope, but are onramps for positioning CA as a go-forward partner. Internally, he has worked to nurture an impactful relationship with the Product organization – one that pay dividends for both sides.

Outside of CA, Oliver is an advisor and angel investor for minority startup companies, and serves on several boards including the Sam Walton College of Business Diversity and Inclusion Board, the Walton Colleges Deans Advisory Council, HackMy Future, Joyful Giver and the Community Empowerment Council (CEC) in his hometown of Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He is passionate about the mentorship of African American and other employees at CA, and creating a culture of inclusion, diversity and gender parity.

We asked Oliver a few questions on how he helps eliminate barriers, both at work and in the community. Here’s what he had to say.

How do you contribute to eliminating the barriers between ideas and outcomes for CA customers?
I believe most barriers are imagined and can be overcome with intellect and determination. Ideas are the beginning of all things and can come from anyone.

Why is it important that we all “bring what we bring” to contribute different and unique perspectives? 
Experiences birth vantage points. The mere fact that every person has a different life story filled with unique experiences is clearly a signal that we’re all different. Those differences are valuable, especially when it comes to solving problems and creating new solutions.

Tell me a bit about how you’re bringing it outside of work with your recent appointment to the advisory board for the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Arkansas. 
The University was a springboard for my career success, so I feel compelled to give back. Serving on the Office of Diversity and Inclusion Board allows me to assist in the design and execution of programs that positively impact the minority student population. A student’s success on campus is key to graduating, which is key to becoming a contributor to our economy and society, so we don’t stop with on campus success. We also help students gain meaningful experiences through mentorships, internships and the acquisition of softer skills that are important to gaining a job – and thriving in it.

What did you learn from this experience that adds to what you do at work every day?  
Working with other professionals to solve problems, design initiatives and sell those to the staff sharpen the skills that I deploy daily at CA. Both boards are made up of talented individuals from diverse backgrounds, which provides an amazing opportunity for personal growth.

Why is it important to you that you’re making a difference – both at home and at work? 
I feel the U.S. has vibrant and varied economic opportunities, yet still the level of poverty, blight, imprisonment and people who believe they don’t have a fair chance are trending the wrong direction. I’m aware of how fortunate I am, and I want to help others. I read See You at the Top by Zig Ziglar as a freshman at the University of Arkansas, and it greatly affected me. The premise is, if you help people get to where they want to go, you will, in turn, reach your own goals. Doing enriching work—for profit or not—breeds internal satisfaction that is difficult to match.
